California-born Courtney is a singer, songwriter and actress, who rose to prominence after becoming the lead singer of Hole, which she formed in 1989. 

Courtney’s music career started in the early 1980s, when she was involved with several groups such Sugar Babydoll, Faith No More, the Pagan Babies, and Babes in Toyland. She then began acting, her debut being a feature in the short film Club Vatica, before being cast by Alex Cox in a supporting role in the 1986 British Sid Vicious biopic ‘Sid and Nancy’. He later cast her in a leading role in his film Straight to Hell. 

In 1989, Courtney went on to form her own band Hole with guitarist Eric Erlandson, and the band quickly gained wide acclaim for their debut album Pretty on the Inside, produced by Sonic Youth’s Kim Gordon. The group became commercially successful, as well as finding popularity around the world. Hole became known for its ‘intense and raw’ sounds and ‘unpredictable’ live shows. 

Hole’s second album Live Through This came out in 1994, but it was the release of Celebrity Skin in 1998 that was a truly international success – going multi-platinum and being nominated for three Grammy Awards. Courtney later released a solo album, America’s Sweetheart in 2003, and whilst Nobody’s Daughter was released as a Hole album seven years later, it was largely considered a solo effort from Courtney. 

Courtney was catapulted back into the acting sphere after her role in the film The People vs. Larry Flynt which saw her nominated for a Golden Globe award. She then went on to feature in Sons of Anarchy, Empire and Revenge, J.T. LeRoy, as well as playing Kitty Menendez in Menendez: Blood Brothers. Courtney also co-starred in Kansas City Choice Boy in 2015, alongside Todd Almond, who composed and wrote the lyrics for the music theatre piece.

Courtney released a diary recounting her life titled ‘Dirty Blond: The Diaries of Courtney Love’, which was published in 2006. 

Courtney’s newest solo song Mother features on the soundtrack of The Turning. Courtney is currently focusing on writing new music, releasing her autobiography and working on her own range of consumer products.
